Hunting the ‘Nightmare’ Bacteria

Hunting the ‘Nightmare’ Bacteria

Recently PBS ran a documentary on the ‘Nightmare’ Bacterias that have developed as a result of over and unnecessary use of antibiotics.

This group of Pan Antibiotic Resistant bacteria is called CPE or carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae.

These bacteria are considered a triple threat.

  1. They are resistant to ALL antibiotics, including last ditch effect antibiotics
  2. They can transfer their invincibility to other bacteria
  3. The bacteria are deadly – Having a fatality rate as high as 50%

If and when a drug resistant bacteria spreads to more common bacteria, like E coli, this problem can seriously escalate.

Recent CDC data shows that these antibiotic resistant bacteria have quadrupled in the last decade or so.  These Enterobacteriaceae have increased from 1.2 % in 2001 to 4.2% in 2011.

“And that’s for the whole family.” says Dr. Arjun Srinivasan, the CDC’s associate director for healthcare-associated infection prevention programs. “When we look at one member of this family, a bacteria called Klebsiella, which is the most common type of CRE that we see in the United States, resistance there has gone from about 2 percent to over 10 percent. So a dramatic increase in the frequency with which these organisms are being seen in our hospitals in the United States.”

Other experts agree the situation is alarming. Infectious disease specialist Dr. Brad Spellberg, of the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, likens the situation to the Titanic’s ill-fated voyage. “We’re not talking about an iceberg that’s down the line,” said Spellberg.  “The ship has hit the iceberg. We’re taking on water. We already have people dying. Not only of CRE, but of untreatable CRE.”

Experts in this field are stating that if these bacteria get out of the hospitals and into the community, it will be uncontrollable.

There problem is compounded by these bacteria moving from one hospital to the next, taking victims in the new hospital when it moves.

The PBS documentary the National Institutes of Health received a patient with this deadly bacteria.  In turn, this bacteria spread to a good deal of other patients.  Ultimately 18 patients die from this one carrier patient in ICU.

44 States have discovered these ‘Nightmare Bacteria’ in their hospitals.

There is much, much more about this on the Frontline website – http://to.pbs.org/HvnJTD

And I will be providing you with additional information about this hidden, invisible threat, so watch for my posts and email on this subject.

The Frontline documentary concludes – The first thing hospitals need to do is test patients to see if they have these bugs. “The basic steps are finding patients with CRE and making sure they are isolated so that they don’t spread it others,” Frieden says.

That includes common sense things like keeping them away from other patients, and sterilizing everything they come into contact with.

They also state they can stop outbreaks.  But for how long.  This bacteria is resistant to all known antibiotics

Frontline interviewed Dr. Charles Knirsch, the Pfizer executive.  He stated that the cost of research and production of new antibiotics has stopped in all but 2 or 3 pharmaceutical companies.  The reason given – “It was a portfolio decision.”  What does that mean to the medical community that is relying on antibiotics to fight these bacteria.  As far as the pharmaceutical companies are concerned “They are on their own.”

Suffice to say, the profit from antibiotics is far less than many other drugs pharmaceutical companies develop and sell.

My word of caution – MRSA is an antibiotic resistant bacteria that is plaguing many in the world but is killed in 30 seconds or less by super oxidized water.

Super oxidized water from specific medical grade water processors kills these bacteria without the possibility of them ever becoming resistant.
